A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
